The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Salvadoran government signed two agreements to establish the International Commission against Impunity in El Salvador (CICIES) in a ceremony at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC.
The OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro, congratulated the President of El Salvador for promoting this initiative and highlighted the experience in the field that the hemispheric institution will contribute to the project. "CICIES works under the principle of absolute independence, we are not a political actor in El Salvador and we do not fight corruption with words, but with technical capabilities and professional aptitude that yields tangible results," he said.
For her part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador, Alexandra Hill, recalled that the fight against corruption is one of her government's priorities. “From day 1 President Bukele promised to do everything in his power to fight corruption and impunity. With the signing of this agreement with the OAS, we set this objective in motion,” said Hill.
The signed agreements establish the regulatory framework for the installation of the Commission and the work of its components.
