The Organization of American States (OAS) and Ecuador today signed an agreement to send an observation mission to the elections for local authorities and members of the Council for Citizen Participation and Social Control on March 24, 2019.
The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, highlighted that Ecuador is the country with the highest level of implementation of the OAS recommendations. "More than 70 percent of our recommendations have been implemented in Ecuador, which is a reflection of the great openness and commitment of the country to strengthen and consolidate democratic processes and also of the Organization's commitment to Ecuador."
For his part, the Permanent Representative of Ecuador, Carlos Alberto Játiva, stressed that for his country it is important to receive the Electoral Observation Mission of the OAS. " The agreement confirms the interest of Ecuador in having an OAS observation mission in our elections. Ecuador has received more observation missions than any other country," said Ambassador Játiva. Since 1968, the OAS has sent 20 missions to the South American country.
The mission will be headed by the former vice president of Costa Rica, Kevin Casas-Zamora.
