The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met today with the Director of Social Programs of the Virtual University of the Tecnológico de Monterrey, Laura Ruiz Pérez, to analyze the agreements reached at the Sixth Summit of the Americas aimed at promoting an open online training center from the Educational Portal of the Americas.
“We are especially interested in continuing to develop the Educational Portal of the Americas because it is a tremendous tool to help spread education in the hemisphere," said Secretary General Insulza at the conclusion of the meeting held in the main building of the OAS, in Washington DC.
For her part, Ruiz Perez noted that at the recent “Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, there was a consensus between all the civil society organizations to promote an open educational resource center." She noted, "There are more than 5,000 hours of free online education available to support various social actors, such as civil society organizations.”
Ruiz Pérez added that “we also want to support public servants, who are a cornerstone in the development of our countries, as well as teachers and educational sectors, because education is a major challenge for the region." Ruiz Pérez attended the meeting accompanied by Rafael Rangel, an academic and the former President of the Tecnológico de Monterrey.
