The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met with the First Vice President of the City Legislature of Buenos Aires, Cristian Ritondo, with whom he spoke about the importance of the issue of public security for countries in the region and the options to continue the support that the organization has provided to the City Legislature in the area of institutional strengthening.

At the meeting, held at the headquarters of the OAS in Washington DC, the two shared their views with respect to the issues of insecurity and organized crime, stressing that initiatives such as the marking of firearms and the fight against crime and urban violence are key to combating insecurity.

During the meeting, Secretary General Insulza recalled that at the XLI OAS General Assembly held in San Salvador in June 2011, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the region adopted the Declaration of San Salvador in which they recognized the importance of the issue of citizen security and made important commitments to cooperate on this issue.

Since December 2008, the OAS has been collaborating with the City Legislature of Buenos Aires in a capacity building program that promotes political dialogue and technical cooperation between the provincial legislatures.
