The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, and the Attorney General of the Dominican Republic, Radhames Jimenez, today held a meeting in which they stressed the need to further expand cooperation in penitentiary and prison policies in the framework of the commitments assumed at the Meetings of Ministers of Justice or of Ministers or Attorneys General of the Americas (REMJA).

At the meeting, held at the Organization’s headquarters in Washington DC, Attorney General Jimenez explained the process that the Dominican Republic has implemented to advance and strengthen the country’s capacities in the management of prisons under the New Prison Management Model.

The meeting served as an opportunity to reiterate the OAS commitment to the efforts of rehabilitation and management of overcrowding in prisons, forensic investigation, reducing the cycle of crime, and the strengthening of judicial systems. The OAS Secretary General reiterated his interest in the subject, and the urgent need to address it from the perspective of hemispheric cooperation, and noted that the OAS will host the Third Meeting of Officials Responsible for the Penitentiary and Prison Policies that will take place on July 18 and 19, 2012 at the organization’s headquarters.
