The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met today with members of the Regional Alliance for Freedom of Expression and Information, a coalition of civil society organizations from the American continent committed to the defense and promotion of both human rights.

During the meeting, held at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, the members of the Alliance, headed by its Executive Secretary, Karina Banfi, expressed their desire to work more closely with the hemispheric Organization to deepen joint work initiatives on how to improve access to information and the implementation of laws on freedom of expression in countries of the continent; create additional spaces for dialogue with civil society focused specifically on these subjects; and support the significant progress achieved by the OAS in recent years on improving its own institutional transparency.

Secretary General Insulza recognized the importance of these issues, the need to improve the implementation of the already existing laws in various countries of the Hemisphere, and asserted his commitment and the Organization’s to create an evaluation or follow-up mechanism to support the efforts of the Member States of the OAS in implementing their laws on freedom of expression and access to information.
