The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, with whom he discussed specific initiatives to strengthen the ties of cooperation between the two institutions in areas such as migration, protection of refugees, and property and identity rights.

During the meeting, which took place at Organization headquarters in Washington, DC, Secretary General Insulza reiterated his commitment to seek solutions to the migration phenomenon and asserted that at the OAS “we are working very actively, mainly with respect to civil registries and migrant rights, and we will continue to explore ways to collaborate within the framework of the hemispheric agenda.”

The High Commissioner of the United Nations recognized the important work the OAS has done on social issues, and advocated for the strengthening of cooperation on issues such statelessness and birth registration in the Member States, as well as for the ratification of international instruments and conventions for the protection of refugees.

The two authorities evaluated specific migration situations in the region and agreed on the importance of joining forces on other issues of regional interest. The director of UNHCR emphasized the issue of refugees persecuted by criminal groups as a new topic of interest in his institution. He also discussed intentions to promote a more active role by the UNHCR in natural disaster situations, an aspect also linked to property rights and human rights in general, and he praised the work of the OAS in this field.
