OAS Secretary General Meets with Mexico’s Under Secretary for Latin America and the Caribbean

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met with Mexico’s Under Secretary for Latin America and the Caribbean at the Secretariat for External Relations, Rubén Beltrán, in his office in Washington, DC.

The two diplomats addressed some of the issues of greatest relevance on the inter-American agenda, such as crime and delinquency, the consolidation of democracy, the situation in Haiti, the elections to be held in some countries of the region this year, and the Summit of the Americas, to be held in 2012 in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. Furthermore, Ambassador Beltrán offered the General Secretariat his country’s support in the affairs of the organization and the search for solutions, stating that “Mexico is on your side.”

The Secretary General thanked the support of the Government of President Felipe Calderón and proposed the establishment of closer coordination between the OAS and the Mexican Secretariat for External Relations.
