The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met today with his counterpart from the Central American Integration System (SICA), Juan Daniel Alemán, who led a delegation from the sub-regional organization that visited OAS headquarters in Washington, DC.

At the meeting, the Secretary General of SICA shared with the head of the OAS the organization’s views on issues such as public safety, development, integration and options for furthering joint work between the two institutions. In this regard, the head of the Central American entity expressed his desire to strengthen bilateral communication with the OAS on matters of common interest.

Secretary General Insulza referred to the importance of the issue of security, which will be the focus of debate during the XLI OAS General Assembly to be held in San Salvador from June 5 to 7. He also mentioned that the organization provides support to some countries in areas such as judicial, penitentiary and law enforcement reform. Other topics discussed at the meeting included the reinstatement of Honduras, and the recent visit of the Secretary General to Colombia and Argentina.

Currently, the President of Guatemala, Álvaro Colom, serves as pro-tempore Chair of SICA, which is why representatives from the Permanent Mission of Guatemala to the OAS were also present at the meeting between Secretary General Insulza and Secretary General Alemán.
