The Permanent Representative of Costa Rica, Rogelio Sotela, today assumed the Chair of the Inter-American Council for Integral Development (CIDI) of the Organization of American States (OAS), and announced that he will focus his work in contributing to narrow the inequality gap in the region.

Ambassador Sotela recalled that Latin America and the Caribbean is the most unequal region in the world, adding that he will seek to strengthen development policies during his tenure. "In Costa Rica the pillar of integral development is essential, which commits me to pledge my best efforts to ensure that the initiatives that come out of CIDI truly help to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of the Americas," he said.

The outgoing Chair, the Permanent Representative of Colombia to the OAS, Andres Gonzalez, said that during his tenure the CIDI addressed issues relating to the environment and social inclusion. The Colombian diplomat especially noted his focus “regarding the serious challenges of inequality, climate change and searching for paths to prosperity, with inclusion and rights in our hemisphere."
