The President of El Salvador, Salvador Sánchez Cerén, today received the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, who visited the Central American country to attend the signing of an agreement on an open national dialogue among the main political parties.
During the meeting, President Sánchez Cerén and Secretary General Insulza discussed the process underway in the country, which began with a call from the Salvadoran President himself. The two also discussed the most recent political and economic events in the region and the world, in particular the recent events concerning the relationship between the United States and Cuba. They devoted special attention to the next Summit of the Americas, which will bring together the Heads of State and Government of the Hemisphere in April in Panama.
The meeting took place in the headquarters of the Presidency of El Salvador, after the two attended the signing of a joint declaration by the political parties in the Salvadoran Legislative Assembly, in which they pledged to promote a process of National Political Dialogue to contribute to the creation of agreements to respond to the basic needs of the population and address the main challenges of the country.
Following his meeting with the President, Secretary General Insulza took part in the meeting of the National Council on Education of El Salvador (CONED), in which the OAS acts as Technical Secretariat together with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the European Union. Also present at the meeting were Carlos Canjura, Minister of Education; Hato Hasbun, Secretary for Governance and Communications; and Robert Valent, UNDP representative in El Salvador.
