The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met with Edison Lanza, the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression-Elect of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), in his office at the headquarters the hemispheric Organization in Washington, DC.
Secretary General Insulza and Rapporteur-elect Lanza discussed the development of the future tasks of the official, the situation of the regional press, issues related to freedom of expression; and new technologies and their impact on the media.
On July 23, the Chair of the Commission, Tracy Robinson, informed the Secretary General of the selection of Mr. Lanza for this position. In her letter, the Chair asked Insulza to "take the necessary steps to formalize the hiring" of Mr. Lanza to perform his new tasks. In response to this request, and in accordance with the cordial relations that exist with the Commission, the Secretary General decided to name Mr. Lanza immediately to the position of trust Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and invited him to meet.
Lanza is a Uruguayan lawyer and journalist, and was appointed for a period of three years; on October 6 he will take office, and will replace Catalina Botero. At the meeting, Secretary General Insulza was accompanied by his Chief of Staff, Hugo de Zela.
