The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today paid his respects to the Observer Mission of Spain to the Organization for the death of former Spanish President Adolfo Suárez.

The head of the OAS visited the Permanent Observer of Spain to the OAS, Ambassador Jorge Hevia, at the Mission’s headquarters in Washington, DC, and signed the book of condolences.

Secretary General Insulza said that President Suárez was "a providential figure in the Spanish transition to democracy, who combined in his action ideals of democracy with ideals of peace." His work, he added, "was not only a legacy for Spain, but for the world in general and all transition processes that many countries experienced. Noting that it is possible to move towards democracy peacefully was very important for us."

Ambassador Hevia thanked the Secretary General for the "finesse, affection and friendship he demonstrated by coming to sign the book of condolences, and, thus, we are very moved by your presence”. The Spanish diplomat regretted the "demise of a major figure in contemporary Spain during a time of great significance for all Spaniards, which gave way to a profound transformation of Spain."
