OAS Secretary General Receives EU Special Representative for Human Rights

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today received the Special Representative of the European Union (EU) for Human Rights, Stavros Lambrinidis, at his office at the headquarters of the institution in Washington, DC.

During the meeting, the two discussed about the human rights situation in the region and the current context in the Hemisphere. In particular, Secretary General Insulza outlined to Representative Lambrinidis the process of strengthening the Inter-American Human Rights System conducted by OAS Member States which ended in March 2013.

In addition, at the meeting the possibility of convening a meeting in Brussels of regional human rights organizations was explored, aimed at exchanging experiences and best practices.

Secretary General Insulza was accompanied at the meeting by the Secretary of External Relations, Alfonso Quiñonez; the Deputy Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), Elizabeth Abi-Mershed; and Pamela Moraga, advisor to Secretary General Insulza. Representative Lambrinidis attended with Ana Sanchez, his adviser, as well as Despina Manos and Gisela Gori, on behalf of the EU Observer Mission to the OAS.
