The new Permanent Representative of Colombia, Luis Ernesto Vargas, presented his credentials today to the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, during a ceremony held at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington, DC.

Ambassador Vargas stressed that he will work to strengthen the four pillars of the OAS: democracy, human rights, integral development and multidimensional security. "The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, told me that my mission at the OAS is to strengthen the Inter-American system of human rights and the Organization of American States," added the Colombian diplomat.

For his part, Secretary Almagro highlighted Colombia's historic ties with the OAS and the institution's work in the Colombian peace process through the Mission to Support the Peace Process (MAPP). "Ambassador Vargas, the commitment of your government to the disadvantaged is in line with our motto of working for more rights for more people", said the OAS Secretary General.

Ambassador Vargas is a lawyer by profession and a judge. Among other activities, he was a commissioner of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
