The Organization of American States (OAS) today hosted the second day of dialogue of the Inter-American Competitiveness Network (RIAC), aimed at raising awareness of the experiences of countries of the region in promoting competitiveness. Today presentations were made by Mexico and the United States.
Pierre Desiguax, Investment Manager of the "Mexico Fund of Funds," explained the initiative "Mexico Ventures," which is managed by the company he works for and is dedicated to injecting between $200,000 and $5mn in funds that are in turn invested in companies. Desiguax emphasized the need for national legislation and the public sector involvement that favors investment at all levels. "It is very important that the effort be global," he said.
Tiffany Karp, Director of Operations of the Global Center for Medical Innovation in the United States (GCMI, for its acronym in English), headquartered in Atlanta, explained that GCMI is a nonprofit organization whose goal is to accelerate the development and commercialization of the next generation of medical and health technology.
Lynn Costa, an adviser to the Department of Commerce of the United States, made a presentation entitled "Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC): Business Ethics." Costa explained the principles of the voluntary code of ethics of APEC regarding sectors which trade in medical equipment, bio-pharmaceuticals and construction, and noted the importance for economic development to have such tools. "We believe that corruption is a problem and this code can help combat it," she said.
The results of the dialogue sessions will be collected and presented at the next Annual Meeting of the RIAC on October 2, 2013 in Panama City, in the framework of the Seventh Competitiveness Forum of the Americas. Last year, the OAS, which serves as Technical Secretariat of the RIAC, compiled all successful experiences from the dialogues in the report "Signs of Competitiveness in the Americas 2012".
