The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today received the Chilean National Ombudsman, Georgy Schubert, with whom he discussed issues related to the defense of vulnerable groups, particularly indigenous populations; the autonomy of ombudsmen in the countries of the region; and the functioning of the system, its challenges and advances at the national level.

The visit took place within the framework of Ombudsman Schubert’s presentation at a special meeting of the Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs of the OAS Permanent Council, chaired by the Permanent Representative of Colombia, Andres Gonzalez Diaz, that promoted the exchange of best practices and experiences around the theme of "Public Defenders as a guarantee of access to justice for persons in situations of vulnerability." The meeting was attended by ombudsmen from other countries of the region, legal affairs commissioners and representatives of OAS Member States.
