OAS Secretary General Visits New PAHO Director

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today made an official visit to the new Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Carissa Etienne, in her office in Washington, DC.

Secretary General Insulza and Director Etienne discussed the joint work of the OAS and the PAHO, as well as the health challenges facing the countries of the hemisphere. The OAS leader highlighted the work of the PAHO in its regional strategy for the control of non-contagious diseases, as well as its cooperation in the preparation of the report on the problem of drugs in the Americas which the OAS is preparing in response to a mandate from the Sixth Summit of the Americas, which took place in April, 2012, in Cartagena, Colombia.

The Secretary for External Relations of the OAS, Ambassador Alfonso Quiñonez, and the Director of the Department of International Relations, Jorge Sanín, accompanied the Secretary General during the visit to PAHO headquarters. Director Etienne assumed her position on January 31, succeeding Mirta Roses.
