The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met with the Commissioners of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), chaired by José de Jesús Orozco, on the occasion of the Commission’s 146th period of sessions, and discussed with them the process of strengthening of the Inter-American System of Human Rights.
In this context, Secretary General Insulza and the Commissioners agreed on the advisability of maintaining an ongoing dialogue on the common goals, shared by the IACHR, the General Secretariat and the Member States, of ensuring that all the countries of the Americas are fully integrated into the Inter-American Human Rights System, that the decisions of the Commission and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights are being followed, and financing is increased. Insulza considered that, to reach agreements and make progress toward these goals, dialogue between the IACHR and the countries is the way to achieve more effective results, and deeply appreciated the response given by the IACHR to the approach of the Member States.
