The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, the Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD), Paul Simons, and delegates from the member countries of the organization today examined, at a meeting in Washington, DC, the progress in the preparation of the Report on the Drug Problem in the Americas, and shared their views on the structure, purpose, content, methodology and scope of the report, being prepared by the OAS.
At the meeting of the Advisory Committee for the preparation of the report, Secretary General Insulza explained the steps that have been taken to this point to put together the document, and highlighted meetings with experts at the national and subregional levels. Insulza explained that the report will consist of two parts: an analysis of existing policies in this area, and a report on scenarios that sets forth possible options for the future.
At the Sixth Summit of the Americas, held in Cartagena, Colombia in April, hemispheric leaders called upon the OAS to prepare a report that analyzes the results of the current drug policies in the hemisphere and explores new approaches to the subject.
