CHINA CONTINUES COOPERATION WITH THE OAS

  August 1, 2006

The People’s Republic of China today presented a $150,000 donation to the Organization of American States (OAS) to support international cooperation projects that promote the political stability and economic development of the member countries. The contribution is part of an agreement signed last year between China and the OAS, under which that country will contribute a total of $1 million over a period of five years to meet these types of goals.

In a brief ceremony at OAS headquarters, Secretary General José Miguel Insulza noted the “importance and relevance” of the projects that will benefit from this donation, underscoring the variety of programs that have been developed thanks to the resources provided to date by the Chinese government.

Two months ago, during a dialogue between the delegations of the member states and observer countries held in the framework of the OAS General Assembly in the Dominican Republic, the Permanent Observer of China to the OAS, Ambassador Zhou Wenzhong, provided details about this year’s contributions. These will benefit projects on trade facilitation and on the mitigation of natural disasters, a workshop on gender and peace, and the Second Meeting of Government Spokespersons of the Americas.

During today’s ceremony, the Alternate Observer of China to the OAS, Ambassador Cai Runguo, emphasized the importance that his government places on the economic and social development of the Americas. “We want to do more so that our cooperation can be greater each year,” Runguo said. He also recalled the recent “successful” mission of a high-level OAS delegation to his country, which established the foundation for the development of an integral China-OAS agenda.
