PANAMA CONTRIBUTES TO OAS FUND FOR SUMMIT PROCESS

  August 9, 2002

The Panamanian government today donated $5,000 to the Organization of American States (OAS), earmarking the contribution for the voluntary fund to support the hemispheric summit process.

"We in Panama have great faith in the Summit of the Americas," declared Ambassador Juan Manuel Castulovich, the Permanent Representative, on presenting Assistant Secretary General Luigi Einaudi with the check he described as a "symbolic" contribution. "We also believe that the more the Summit and the OAS can come together, the more promising the future of both will be."

Reiterating his government's commitment to the summit process in the Americas, the Panamanian diplomat stressed the continued hope that the Summits and the OAS would come together, "because therein lies a solid future for the OAS."

Ambassador Einaudi thanked the government of Panama for its contribution and praised that nation for being one of the first small countries to support the summit process and to implement summit follow-up programs.
