BOLIVIA HAS A NEW AMBASSADOR TO OAS

  July 9, 2003

Ambassador María Tamayo today presented credentials as Bolivia’s new Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States. She said she came to Washington ready to build on the longstanding excellent relations her government has maintained with the OAS Secretariat and its subsidiary bodies.

In handing Secretary General César Gaviria her letters of accreditation during a brief ceremony, Ambassador Tamayo also brought greetings from President Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada, and pledged that she and the staff of her Permanent Mission, some of whom accompanied her for the ceremony, would work together “to help achieve the hemispheric goals shared by the Organization’s member countries.”

Welcoming the new Ambassador, Secretary General Gaviria made mention of her solid professionalism and experience, remarking that the Bolivian President and the Foreign Minister had made a great choice in appointing Ambassador Tamayo to represent them at the OAS. “We will have a lot of opportunity to work together towards attaining the mandates given by the heads of state and heads of government over the years,” he declared, pointing to the Organization’s ongoing efforts to help member countries meet the challenges of integration, globalization and a more complex world.

Prior to this assignment, Ambassador María Tamayo served as Bolivia’s Deputy Permanent Delegate to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Headquarters in Paris. She has also served as Director General in the Bolivian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship, as well as Director of Summits Coordination and Vice Minister for External Policy with the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

She holds Master’s degrees from The Georgetown University and the Bolivian Catholic University-Harvard University of La Paz, Bolivia.
