OAS HAILS COLOMBIA'S PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS

The Organization of American States has hailed last Sunday's the presidential elections in Colombia, won by Alvaro Uribe, noting the courage of the millions of citizens that turned out to vote to freely and directly express their opinion.

OAS Permanent Council Chair, El Salvador's Ambassador Margarita Escobar, expressed the hemispheric body's congratulations to the people and government of Colombia, during a meeting Tuesday. She also cited a press release from the OAS Electoral Observation Mission in Colombia, led by Santiago Murray, underscoring the normal conditions under which the elections took place. The OAS also hailed the Colombian election authorities for the speedy posting of election results.

Meantime, U.S. Ambassador to the OAS, Roger Noriega, also offered his government's congratulations to Colombia and made special mention of the country's armed forces and national police, "for providing a secure environment in which the elections could be held."

Colombia's Permanent Representative, Humberto de la Calle, thanked the OAS for its team of electoral observers led by Santiago Murray. He described Sunday's elections as "a milestone in our country's democratic history." He noted as well that "the citizens overcame all kinds of threats from various extremist quarters and went out to vote to express their deep support for institutions and for order-all essential elements of representative democracy as enshrined in the Inter-American Democratic Charter."

The Council Chair also announced that a preliminary report from the OAS Electoral Observation Mission is to be presented to the Council at its next sitting, scheduled for next June 19.
