OAS SECRETARY GENERAL STATEMENT ON BELIZE

  April 26, 2005

The Acting Secretary General of the Organization of American States, Ambassador Luigi R. Einaudi, has been following closely events in Belize. Ambassador Einaudi today expressed his hope for an early and peaceful resolution to the current difficulties in Belize within the framework of the Constitution and in the interest of political and economic stability and the welfare of the people of Belize.

In relation to the interruption of electricity and telephone services which occurred throughout the country last week, Ambassador Einaudi stated that “acts of economic sabotage, objectionable under any circumstances, have particularly negative consequences in developing countries which must maximize the resources and infrastructure available to them for the benefit of all their citizens”.

The Acting Secretary General called on all parties to respect the rule of law, to abide by the Constitution of Belize, and to engage in dialogue to resolve any outstanding issues of national interest in accordance with the democratic tradition of the people of Belize and with the principles of the Inter-American Democratic Charter.
