OAS SECRETARY GENERAL SUPPORTS DEMOCRATIC PROCESS IN ECUADOR

  March 9, 2007

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, said today that both the General Secretariat and the Permanent Council are following the ongoing developments in Ecuador with interest.

The Secretary General expressed his support of President Rafael Correa’s efforts to advance the constitutional process that seeks to put an end to the chronic instability that has affected Ecuador in the last decades.

In this regard, he considers that the April 15 Referendum constitutes a fundamental milestone in the process of institutional recovery. The General Secretariat has decided to accept an invitation extended to the OAS by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) to observe this vote.

Insulza warned that it is crucial for all political and social sectors to participate in this process in a calm and harmonious environment, which is essential for its success.

In this context, the OAS Secretary General called on the institutions involved in the recent critical developments to participate in efforts to normalize the country, with the aim of strengthening democracy and opening the door to the constitutional changes that the sister Republic of Ecuador needs for its peaceful and democratic development.
