OAS and Government of El Salvador Signed Agreement for Electoral Observation Mission

The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Government of El Salvador signed on Friday, March 2 the agreement of procedures for the Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) that the OAS will send to the Central American country to observe the elections that will be held on March 11.
OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza appointed Dr. Lourdes Flores Nano, a Peruvian lawyer and politician, as Chief of Mission. The Mission is to be composed of 22 international observers from 13 Member and observer States, and it will start its activities in the country on Monday, March 5. Dr. Flores will meet with members of the electoral authorities, government, candidates, representatives of the international community, as well as civil society groups and many other sectors.
Dr. Flores has had an important political career in Peru, where she was a Congresswoman, Municipal Councillor, and President of the Popular Christian Party, in addition to being a Presidential candidate twice. Internationally, she has had an outstanding performance as a Board Member of the Inter-American Dialogue, Second Vice President of the Christian Democrat Organization of America (ODCA) and Vice President of the Christian Democratic International - IDC, among others.
In accordance with the provisions of the Inter-American Democratic Charter, the missions are carried out under the principles and rules of the OAS, preformed in an objective, impartial and transparent manner and with adequate technical capacity. Following these mandates, the EOM/OAS will deploy observers in much of the territory, in order to know about the management and organization of the electoral campaign and the elections themselves.
