NEW BOLIVIAN AMBASSADOR TO OAS CALLS FOR DEEPER UNDERSTANDING
TO FIGHT ILLEGAL DRUGS AND ARMS TRAFFICKING

  January 12, 2007

Bolivia’s new Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (OAS), Ambassador Reynaldo Cuadros Anaya, says his government wants to promote a deeper understanding of the drug problem so that the region can be more effective in combating the scourge.
Cuadros, who presented credentials to Assistant Secretary General Albert Ramdin during a ceremony at the headquarters of the hemispheric organization, described drug trafficking as a complex phenomenon that sometimes “masks other interests and conceals other issues that are more serious, such as arms trafficking,” another problem the Bolivian diplomat said calls for greater international attention.

The Bolivian envoy said his government will continue supporting the Organization’s wide-ranging agenda, and he noted issues of particular interest such as the environment, indigenous peoples, human rights and the fight against corruption at all levels. He also explained that his government’s vision seeks to “emphasize the importance of brotherhood for the common good.”
Welcoming the Permanent Representative of Bolivia, Assistant Secretary General Ramdin assured him the OAS is committed to continuing its cooperation with Bolivia and with the Permanent Mission headed by Ambassador Cuadros.
Prior to his present assignment, Ambassador Cuadros served as advisor to the Bolivian Chamber of Deputies, among other posts. He has written extensively on anthropology, science and the environment and also researched ancient cultures and civilizations of various countries. His academic qualifications include master’s degrees in environmental sciences and clean development, and he is a candidate for a doctorate in quality education based on principles and values.
