INSULZA REITERATES OAS’ WILLINGNESS TO WORK TOWARDS
THE PEACE PROCESS IN COLOMBIA

  January 15, 2008

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today said that “our Organization has always been prepared to cooperate in the solution of the serious situation facing Colombia, within the framework of our permanent commitment with that nation’s peace process.” This affirmation came as a response to a statement by the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez Frías, in which the Venezuelan leader “urges the OAS to find a model that could bring peace to Colombia.”

Insulza added that President Chavez’s words “are very positive and require that, immediately, we begin a process of consultation with the Government of Colombia. After that, we will be able to propose a course of action as soon as possible.”

The OAS Secretary General also said that “the humanitarian issue needs to be resolved in an urgent manner. With this in mind we will approach the drafting of our proposals.”
