Government Spokespersons of the Americas to Meet in Chile

  August 12, 2005

Government spokespersons from the Americas will meet in Santiago, Chile, on August 17 and 18 to participate in a seminar organized by the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Ministry General Secretariat of the Government of Chile. The seminar will include roundtable discussions and presentations by experts on issues related to public information in the 34 OAS member states.

President Ricardo Lagos of Chile will open the seminar, along with OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza; José Luis Machinea, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC); and Osvaldo Puccio, the Minister Secretary General of Chile, who is hosting the event.

Insulza emphasized the importance of bringing together the chief official spokespersons of the OAS member states. “In this era of globalization, access to information and to communications technologies is key to strengthening democratic governance and guaranteeing transparency,” he said. He added that the seminar is designed to help government spokespersons meet today’s challenges by exchanging information and experiences, promoting dialogue, and creating a network of people who manage public information in the region.

Recognizing the important role of the media in promoting a democratic culture, the seminar organizers hope the meeting will also lay the groundwork for coverage and follow-up of the Fourth Summit of the Americas, scheduled to take place November 4-5 in Mar del Plata, Argentina. The seminar is made possible thanks to the support of the OAS, the Chilean government, ECLAC and the governments of the People’s Republic of China and the Hellenic Republic.
