ROUNDTABLE WITH CIVIL SOCIETY TO DISCUSS OAS GENERAL ASSEMBLY ISSUES

  April 28, 2006

Civil society representatives will meet at the Organization of American States (OAS) May 2-3 to exchange ideas about issues on the inter-American agenda and develop recommendations for the consideration of the OAS General Assembly. The annual meeting of the region’s foreign ministers will take place in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in June.

The Roundtable with Civil Society, which begins on Tuesday, May 2, will bring together close to 100 representatives of organizations and networks from 22 countries in the region. Following this event, participants will have the opportunity to meet with the member states, during a special session of the Committee on Inter-American Summits Management and Civil Society Participation in OAS Activities.

The Roundtable with Civil Society will examine the main theme proposed for the General Assembly — “Good Governance and Development in the Knowledge-Based Society”—as well as the promotion of democracy and human rights. Participants will also discuss proposals related to the implementation of the Declaration of Florida, issued by the region’s foreign ministers in June 2005, and the Declaration and Plan of Action of Mar del Plata, adopted during the Fourth Summit of the Americas.

OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza will speak at the opening of the event, along with the Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic to the OAS, Ambassador Roberto Álvarez.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, May 3, there will be a special session of the Committee on Inter-American Summits Management and Civil Society Participation, chaired by Ambassador Rodolfo Gil, Argentina’s Permanent Representative to the OAS. Civil society representatives will have the chance to share their ideas with the member states and present the recommendations that will serve as a basis for the dialogue between the foreign ministers and civil society, which will take place June 4, in the framework of the thirty-sixth regular session of the General Assembly.
