CHILEAN SENATOR SOLEDAD ALVEAR TO SPEAK ON WOMEN AND POLITICS: LECTURE SERIES OF THE AMERICAS

Chilean Senator Soledad Alvear, who has served as her country’s Minister of Justice and Minister of Foreign Affairs, will be the keynote speaker for the eighteenth conference in the Lecture Series of the Americas, next Tuesday at the Organization of American States (OAS). She will talk about “The Political Participation of Women in the Americas.”

A lawyer with a distinguished political career, Senator Alvear is President of the Christian Democratic Party and was a potential candidate for the 2005 presidential elections. She created Chile’s National Women’s Service and has also been an academic in several universities. She has spoken and written extensively on democracy, justice, human rights, the family and international relations.

Following her remarks, which will be Webcast live (www.oas.org), Alvear will take questions from the audience. The conference will be broadcast by radio and television at a date to be announced.

Created by the OAS Permanent Council to promote democratic principles and values in the countries of the hemisphere, the Lecture Series of the Americas invites internationally renowned speakers to address key issues such as democracy, human rights, social development, hemispheric security and the fight against poverty. The conferences are possible thanks to financial contributions from Peru’s San Martín de Porres University and the governments of Greece and Qatar.
