RESOLUTION ON THE POLITICAL CRISIS IN HONDURAS (July 1st, 2009)
The Thirty-Seventh Special Session of the OAS General Assembly adopted a resolution strongly condemning the coup d’Etat in Honduras and demanded the immediate and unconditional return of President José Manuel Zelaya Rosales to his constitutional duties. (more)

The OAS supports the Government of Guatemala and welcomes its commitment to investigate and clarify recent events
The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OEA) approved, by acclamation, a Resolution to support the Government of the Republic of Guatemala, and welcomed the government’s commitment to investigate and clarify the recent events that have had a great socio-political impact on that country. OAS opens review process of Anti-Drug strategy in the Americas
The Organization of American States (OAS), through the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD), opened Wednesday a review process of the anti-drug strategy in the Americas, following a proposal by the Secretary General of the hemispheric institution, José Miguel Insulza, that established reducing demand as the main target. OAS Group of Friends of Haiti met in Washington to promote Donors Conference
The Organization of American States (OAS) Group of Friends of Haiti met this week in Washington, DC, to promote the Haiti Donors Conference which will take place on April 14 in the same city. Also took part in the meeting representatives from the United Nations, Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF). Secretary General of the Council of Europe: Regarding Human Rights “the key is what we do, not what we preach”
The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Terry Davis, said that for Human Rights to reach a dimension truly universal all countries, including well established democracies, need to accept the rules of the game and abide them. (more)

OAS Assistant Secretary General, Ambassador Albert R. Ramdin, yesterday provided an update to the Group of Friends of Haiti on recent electoral developments in Haiti including the decision of the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) to approve 65 of the 105 registered candidates for the upcoming partial senatorial elections scheduled to be held on April 19th, this year. The Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American Sates (OAS), Albert Ramdin, recently met with representatives from the Organization Private Sector of the Americas to discuss issues related to the private sector participation in the forums scheduled to be held prior to the V Summit of the Americas and the 39th OAS General Assembly. Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Ambassador Albert Ramdin inaugurated the “Workshop on the Inter-American System for Natural Disaster Mitigation” stressing the importance of making the Inter-American system work better through efficient coordination, in order that the OAS can respond more adequately to the needs of member states in the area of natural disaster reduction. Insulza expresses concern over Haitian situation and calls for calm among political actors
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, expressed his concern today about the decision of the Provisional Electoral Council of Haiti (CEP) to exclude all of one party’s candidates for the senatorial elections scheduled to be held in that country on April 19 this year. At OAS forum, the President of The World Bank recommends transforming the current economic challenges into opportunities
The President of the World Bank, Robert Zoellick, was invited to participate as the main speaker at the Thirty-first edition of the Lecture Series of the Americas of the Organization of American States (OAS) that took place on Monday December 8th, 2008. After a brief introduction by the OAS Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza, Mr. Zoellick engaged in a dialogue with former Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs, Bernard Aronson, during which he shared his views on the various challenges that Latin America is facing with respect to the current economic crisis that is affecting the world markets. OAS Launches Essay Contest to engage youth in Fifth Summit of the Americas
The Summits of the Americas Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) recently launched the “Summit of the Americas Essay Contest”, within the framework of the Fifth Summit of the Americas that will be held in Trinidad and Tobago on April 17-19, 2009. The initiative, organized in coordination with the National Secretariat for the Fifth Summit of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, will provide youth with an opportunity to express their perspectives on major hemispheric concerns to be addressed in the context of the Fifth Summit. Insulza highligths the strength of Venezuelan democracy after regional elections
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, congratulated the Government and the people of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, for the normality of the regional elections that took place yesterday in the country and praised the massive participation by Venezuela’s citizens, who went to the polls in a peaceful and orderly manner. The OAS condemns terrorist violence in India
The Organization of the American States energetically condemns the terrorist attack perpetrated yesterday in Mumbai, which have taken the life of more than a hundred victims. The OAS sends to the Government and the people of India its condolences and solidarity. (more)
At preparatory meeting of the Fifth Summit of the Americas, Insulza invites countries to consider the impact of the world’s economic situation on the region
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, invited national summit coordinators responsible for debating the content of the Fifth Summit’s “Declaration of Commitment” to consider the economic challenges that the world’s economy is currently facing. This statement was done in the framework of the preparations for the Fifth Summit of the Americas that will be held in Trinidad and Tobago on April 17 – 19, 2009. (more)
