OAS Approves Resolution on Bolivian Situation

The OAS Permanent Council approved in the early hours of Saturday, May 3rd, a Resolution on the situation in Bolivia that expresses its solidarity and support for the people of Bolivia, the Constitutional Government of President Evo Morales Ayma, the democratic institutional system, and officials elected by the Bolivian people (more)

Panama Signs Memorandum of Understanding with OAS on Cooperation for Exchange of Information in Legal Matters
Panama’s Interior and Justice Minister Daniel Delgado Diamante signed a memorandum of understanding with the OAS for his government to participate in the Hemispheric Network for Exchange of Information for Mutual Assistance in Criminal and Extradition Matters. (more)

A summit of the European Union and the Latin America-Caribbean (LAC) region will be held in Lima, Peru, beginning May 16, it was announced at the Organization of American States (OAS) headquarters. (more)
OAS Begins Accrediting Journalists for General Assembly in Medellin, Colombia, in June
The Organization of American States has opened registration for print, radio and television journalists as well as photographers and camera operators who wish to cover the Thirty-Eighth Regular Session of the General Assembly that will be held in Medellín, Colombia, from June 1 to 3. The Media registration form and the Press Handbook are available online. Media representatives are being asked to fill out and submit their form no later than May 23. (more)
Haiti to get Emergency Food Aid through OAS-PADF Initiative
Some 400 tons of fortified rice, worth more than $1.5 million, is available for delivery as emergency food aid to Haiti, especially for those in greatest need, the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF), an affiliate of the Organization of American States, announced in Washington on Thursday.OAS Assistant Secretary General Albert R. Ramdin chaired the meeting of the Organization’s Group of Friends of Haiti, at which PADF Executive Director John Sanbrailo announced the proposed aid package. Sanbrailo also appealed to OAS member states and other interested parties to help mobilize some $200,000 in funds to underwrite the cost of shipping the rice. (more)
OAS Secretary General Insulza Condemns Violence in Haiti
Secretary General José Miguel Insulza of the OAS has expressed his concern over the latest developments in Haiti, condemning acts of violence that have accompanied the demonstrations and calling on all Haitians to uphold the rule of law and to refrain from any action that could undermine the process of socio-economic development and the progress achieved thus far. Briefing U.S. Members of Congress on Haiti, OAS Delegation Calls for Urgent Short Term Assistance for the Country
Assistant Secretary General Albert Ramdin led an Organization of American States delegation to the United States Congress, where they briefed members of the House of Representatives Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere on developments in Haiti and called for urgent, short-term assistance to address immediate needs for jobs and economic development.The House of Representatives Western Hemisphere Subcommittee Chairman, Elliot Engel; Yvette Clarke (New York); Barbara Lee (California); and Donald Payne (New Jersey) were the Members of Congress on hand for the briefing, along with senior staffers representing other members of Congress. OAS an UN Advisory Group Pledge Further Support for Haiti Development
The Organization of American States and the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) have undertaken to deepen their cooperation to promote stability and socio-economic development in Haiti. They also pledged to continue supporting efforts by that Caribbean country to mobilize resources to fund the initiatives under the National Strategy Paper for Growth and Poverty Reduction, with a particular focus on job-creation. Model OAS Assembly for University Students Opens in Washington, DC
The Model General Assembly of the Organization of American States (MOAS) opened at OAS headquarters in Washington, bringing together more than 350 university students from 19 universities in the United States, 9 in Latin America and 1 in the Caribbean for a weeklong engagement to discuss hemispheric issues and negotiate a series of resolutions on issues such as human rights, democracy, security and development. Barbados’ Permanent Representative to the OAS has assumed the chairmanship of the OAS Permanent Council, the second highest decision-making body of the 34 member hemispheric organization. (more)
Haiti Prime Minister Tells OAS of His Country's Considerable Progress
Jacques-Édouard Alexis, the Haitian Prime Minister, today reassured the members of the Organization of American States Permanent Council that the general situation in the country “has significantly improved.” Addressing a protocolary session of the Permanent Council, called in his honor, Prime Minister Alexis delivered a wide-ranging speech to the member state ambassadors, observers and representatives of other international organizations, touting his government’s initiatives to reform the police force and the justice system, “with special emphasis on training, professionalization, discipline and development of a police force that works closely with the community.” (more)
Insulza: Health Vital in Fight Against Poverty
“Health is undoubtedly as indispensable a factor in combating poverty and inequity as it is to bringing about true development for our citizens,” Secretary General José Miguel Insulza of the OAS told member state delegates at joint meeting of the OAS Permanent Council and the Permanent Executive Committee of the Inter-American Council for Integral Development (CEPCIDI).
