Nations and populations around the world, and countries of the Americas are not the exception, experience conditions such as poverty, unemployment, inequality, discrimination, exclusion, lack of a life perspective, among other factors. These hardships can contribute to the possible involvement of these populations with opportunities that seem to lead to a better life. However, what may seem like a great prospect, can turn into a crime that violates the basic human rights of individuals without differentiating among sex, social or economical status, political affiliation, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, to name a few.

The name for this crime is trafficking in persons and governments of the world, including member states of the Organization of American States (OAS) have signed and ratified conventions and protocols condemning the practice of criminal acts manifested in: sexual and labor exploitation, sex tourism, exploitation resulting from the illegal adoption of children, removal of organs, domestic servitude, forced marriages, children in armed conflicts, exploitation by street begging, etc.

Since 1999, November 25 has been designated by the UN General Assembly as International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. It is a day that has been marked by women’s rights activists around the world since 1981.

This year, UN Women and partners around the world are marking the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (25 November – 10 December) under the theme of ‘Orange the World: Raise Money to End Violence against Women and Girls’. A host of public events will galvanize global attention and action to end the pandemic of violence against women. From marches in Uganda, Serbia and Timor-Leste, to a public rally on motorbikes in Pakistan, people will take to the streets to say no to violence, and iconic buildings will light up in orange.

On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the United States reaffirms our belief that gender-based violence is never acceptable, that women and girls have the right to live free from violence, and that countries are stronger when homes, neighborhoods, and communities are safe for everyone.

Cada 25 de noviembre, el mundo conmemora el Día Internacional de la Eliminación de las Violencias Contra las Mujeres, como homenaje a las hermanas Patria, Minerva y María Teresa Mirabal, quienes fueron asesinadas ese día por militares agentes de la dictadura de Rafael Leónidas Trujillo en República Dominicana.

La conmemoración tiene lugar desde 1981 pero solo hasta 1999 la ONU la reconoció como emblemática y la adoptó en sus resoluciones.
