XII Meeting of Ministers of Labour

The meeting of the XII Inter-American Conference of Ministers of Labor was held from the 17th to the 19th of October, 2001. At the meeting conferees approved the Declaration and Plan of Action of Ottawa. These texts contain the stipulations of the Ministers of Labor in relation to, among other things:
  • the promotion of the basic rights of the worker,
  • the improvement of working conditions,
  • the importance of investment in human capital,
  • the examination of labor issues through the processes of the Summits of the Americas,
  • the improvement of mechanisms to measure the effectiveness of established projects and the success of technical cooperation,
  • increasing the capacity of small economies,
  • improvement of the capabilities of the Ministers of Labor to develop and implement effective policies on labor and labor markets,
  • the improvement of methods and procedures to collect data on labor issues,
  • the elimination of child labor, and
  • the integration of such questions into labor policy.

Also approved were pronouncements regarding international terrorism, the peace process in Columbia, and the SISMEL project. Equally noteworthy was Brazil's offer to host the 13th Conference. Canada announced its financial support for the development of the activities of the Conference and its Work Groups. Likewise, the United States and the Inter-American Development Bank indicated their willingness to support the work of the Conference.
