Social Development
The eradication of poverty and inequality represents one of the most pressing challenges confronting the Western Hemisphere according to the Declaration of the III Summit of the Americas.
In fact, more than 40 percent of the population of Latin America and the Caribbean presently live in conditions of poverty and the region suffers from the least equitable distribution of income in the world. Concern for social development has been seen in the various declarations and actions of the Organization of American States since its creation. Currently, this preoccupation manifests itself principally through work carried out by the Inter-American Program to Combat Poverty and Discrimination, approved by the General Assembly in 1997. In the area of social development member countries have made continual efforts to meet the projections they set, particularly in the fields of building national capacity in social management and in the promotion of horizontal cooperation. ........... ............ ........... .......... .......... ........... ........... ............ ........... .............. ................. ............... ................ ............... ................ ................. ............... .............. ................. ............... ................ ............... ................
