At the direction of Conference President and Miami Mayor Manuel A. (Manny) Diaz, The U.S. Conference of Mayors is holding five ’08 Mayors’ Action Forums between early August and early October in which America’s mayors will forge an action agenda for cities and metro areas to present to the next President of the United States. The five national events in five cities across the country are intended to prepare the Conference to present the next President with a set of priorities for action on urban/suburban problems that can be taken during the first 100 days of the new administration.

In 2003, the United Nations (UN) called for an in-depth study on all forms of violence against women. This was intended to be, “A statistical overview on all forms of violence against women, in order to better evaluate the scale of such violence, while identifying gaps in: 1 - Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women, UN Doc A/RES/48/104, 20 December 1993; 2- Fourth World Conference on Women Platform for Action, Strategic Objective D.2, No. 129(a), 1995. 3 - Violence in the Americas - A Regional Analysis Including a Review of the Implementation of the Inter-American Convention on the Prevention, Punishment and Eradication of Violence Against Women: Executive Summary, 2000.

La seguridad ciudadana es un determinante fundamental del bienestar de los hogares y las comunidades. El importante crecimiento del delito y de la violencia en muchos países de América Latina en los últimos años no solo ha implicado altos costos económicos y sociales, sino que ha comprometido
la gobernabilidad democrática y la legitimidad del Estado al socavar la confianza de los ciudadanos entre sí y en las autoridades.
