The Department of Sustainable Development (OAS-DSD) is to play a high profile role in support of the preparatory process leading up to the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio + 20) who was held June 20-22, 2012, in Brazil. Consistent with the roles that it played in previous global conferences on environment and development dating back to Founex and Stockholm, the Department has prepared a "Roadmap to Rio+20" to support this process through analyzing the institutional framework for sustainable development.
Furthermore, the OAS-DSD is organizing a series of hemispheric dialogues in a variety of sustainable development themes, such as Energy and Climate Change, Integrated Water Resources Management, Biodiversity and Sustainable Land Management and Environmental Law, Policy and Governance. The results of these dialogues will feed into the Conference process through means such as policy papers and recommendations.
This seventh dialogue in the series, which will take place April 4, 2012 in the OAS Main Building in Washington, D.C., will focus on institutional structures, policies, and procedures to facilitate good governance within Disaster Risk Management. Expert panelists will deliberate on ways to strengthen these institutions and will be called upon to outline recommendations on the implementation of basic governance principles and improving relationships among stakeholders.
