Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs)

There are about 120 million micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which generate between 50 and 70 percent of jobs in the region. Proven success of the SBDC Model in El Salvador has resulted in
plans toexpand the model to Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama and Dominican Republic
Did you know that in Argentina the SME sector accounts for 65% of the GDP, almost 70% of the employment, and 15% of the exports? MSMEs in Latin America and the Caribbean generate less than
5 percent of exports of goods and services...
The Economic Empowerment and Trade Program promotes economic development and sustainable economic growth in OAS Member States with a special focus on MSMEs. The OAS fosters support for MSMEs in Member States at both the policy and programmatic levels.

Through the Department of Economic and Social Development (DESD), the Executive Secretariat for Integral Development (SEDI) assists member states in their efforts to promote competitiveness, productivity, innovation as well as the growth of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), particularly those owned by women, and their access to national, regional and global markets.

It is estimated that in the Western Hemisphere there are about 120 million micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which generate between 50 and 70 percent of jobs in the region.  With an average life of only 14 months and most of them operating in the informal sector, MSMEs in Latin America and the Caribbean generate less than 5 percent of exports of goods and services and only one third of them have the capacity to engage in international trade of goods and services.

Given their role and contribution in fostering job creation, poverty reduction and prosperity with social inclusion, the OAS fosters support for MSMEs in Member States at both the policy and programmatic levels.
