Tall prairie grasses cover most of Uruguay's land surface. Only a small percentage of the land is forested, most of the trees growing in narrow stretches along the watercourses. The principal species are the ombu, a scrubby, treelike plant, and the alder. Others include the willow, eucalyptus, poplar, acacia, and aloe. The algaroba (carob tree) and the quebracho (whose wood and bark are utilized in tanning and dyeing) are prevalent, and indigenous palms grow in the valleys of the Sierra de San José Ignacio and along the southeastern coast. Mimosa, myrtle, rosemary, and the scarlet-flowered ceibo are common.
