Cheddi Jagan
Walter Rodney

Cheddi Jagan
Cheddi Jagan, born on
March 22, 1918, is known as a pioneer for liberation from British
rule. He struggled to bring democracy and freedom to the small
territory, finally rising to the role of President of Guyana
(1992-1997) in the country's first democratic elections. Jagan died
on March 6, 1997.

Walter Rodney
Walter Rodney was born
on March 23, 1942 and died on June 13, 1980. He studied at Queen's
College and the University of the West Indies, and later earned a
PhD in 1966 at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London.
Rodney was a well-known activist and scholar, bringing political
awareness to the working poor. Rodney was a prominent Pan-Africanist,
and was important in the Black Power movement of the Caribbean. He
was killed by a bomb explosion in 1980 while running for office in
Guyanese elections.
