Officials from the Hamilton Port Authority where in Halifax to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Halifax Port Authority aimed at advancing the development of sea shipping service opportunities in Canada. The President of Hamilton Port declared that both the Hamilton and Halifax ports have a strategic location that offer a lot of advantages for maritime commerce.

Costa Rica will reinforce port security

Costa Rica has joined the Container Control Programme (CCP), an initiative from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, and the World Customs Organization. The Program will assist governments to minimize the risk of the containers that arrive and depart from their ports from being used for criminal activities, such as drug or human trafficking.

Confiscated U.S. $41 million hidden in container ships (Mexico)

Last September, over U.S. $41 million hidden in container ships that were going from the Port of Manzanillo in Mexico to the Port of Buenaventura in Colombia were confiscated. This is considered one of the biggest cash confiscations, carried out jointly by the Mexican, Colombian and U.S. authorities. In nine days, U.S. $41 million in cash was confiscated, from which U.S. $28 million were given to Colombia and U.S. $13 million to México.

Tourist Projects in the Port Savador Allende, Nicaragua

The government of the Citizen Power through the Institute of Tourism (INTUR) is supporting the Port Salvador Allende to carry out more projects in order to promote tourism in Nicaragua. Among the upcoming projects are: the expansion of the breakwater towards the port’s western area in order to reduce the force of the waves and build a dock; and a permanent exhibition for artisans to offer their goods at the port.

Panama Canal Expansion

The expansion of the Panama Canal was initiated by the Consorcio Internacional Grupo Unidos por el Canal (GUPC), composed by the Spanish Sacyr-Vallehermoso, the Italian Impregilo, and the Belgium Jan de Nul companies and the construction company Panameña Urbana. The project aims to build locks that will allow the transit of larger ships. This expansion will increase by 40% the capacity of freight traffic through the routes connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Panama Canal signs an agreement with American port

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) signed an agreement of understanding with the American Port Everglades in Florida, U.S.A., in order to promote actions for bilateral commerce.
Alberto Alemán, ACP Administrator, stated that both parts will work together in order to “promote the exchange of goods directed to Panama by sea”.

The Port of Long Beach will test TWIC Scanners (United States)
-
The Port of Long Beach and the Port of Los Angeles will use fingerprint scanners to improve internal port security as part of the new worker identification program (Transportation Worker Identification Credential program (TWIC). The machines will verify the cardholder's biometric data; these ports will be the only ones on the West Coast and two out of the five ports nationwide to try out the new equipment.

Environmental Protection Agency’s Funds for Ports (United States)

U.S. $26.5 million in federal funds will be allocated to the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach in order to take action against pollution in these locations. In addition, the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) funding will be geared towards modernizing the diesel engines of the vehicles used for construction and operating cargo, as well as the school busses and trucks in the L.A, Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

The Svendborg International Maritime Academy (SIMAC), the Department of Maritime Research and Innovation at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) and the Centre for Shipping Economics and Innovation at the Copenhagen Business School (CBS) are organizing this event. The objective of this Seminar is to facilitate the interaction among PhD students; in addition, the seminar will conglomerate more experienced professionals from the private and public sector, who will bestow their knowledge and offer constructive criticism regarding the research projects.
