1. Inversions continues with the extension of the Panama Canal

The extension of the Panama Canal continues to be the main project which develops new inversions in the port sector for the movement of cargo or storage of fuel.
The amplification of the port of Manzanillo in Colón should be granted this year, they should grant concession for administration and operation of the Braswell shipyard and the Panama Maritime Authority (PAM) should call the bidding for the construction of a general cargo port in the Pacific, which includes the movement of grains.
Also, we await the process to begin the construction of a cruise port in Amador, where there are no facilities to embark the boats which transports millions of tourists.

2. Obligating use of a Single Window as of March (México)

As of March first of the present year, it will be an obligation to use Single Window for the processes of imports, exports and mercantile transits, informed Gerardo Perdomo Danciprian, general administrator of Customs.
The customs at the port of Lázaro Cárdenas is the first to enter in line, after the first recognition that president Felipe Calderon made with the tablet that will be used to verify in the 49 customs of the country, explained the official.
“We established a strategy in the interior of the Tax Administration Services (TAS) to gradually liberate the official working at the window so all foreign trade actors can become integrated. The formalities by part of the Customs General Administration of (TAS) of SAT currently finds itself totally integrated in the window handling the customs. We hope in another stage to incorporate the secretaries of the National Defense; Environment; Agriculture and Health by the end of January” he said.

3. Logistical zone will become a reality in Puerto Bolivar and Dique Seco in Ecuador

The Ecuadorian government gave the green light to begin projects, such as the Logistic Support Zone for Puerto Bolivar and Dique Seco, but under the presidential vision to go beyond the simple ship maintenance with the implementation of a large naval shipyard.
The minister coordinator of the Production, Employment and Competitiveness, Santiago León Abad assumed this week the compromise to as soon as possible fund the studies for the implantation of a true Logistic Support Zone following models which prevail in the modern world along with Dique Seco which would complete the bases to build the development of the province of El Oro, the southern region in Ecuador and the country in general.

During the official inauguration of the 2011-2012 cruise season, in the Cruise Terminal Quinquela Martin, the Secretary of Transportation, Juan Pablo Schiavi, announced a bonus rate of between 15 and 20 percent for cruises come out of season. "The growth of the arrival of cruise ships is significant. There are 159 today, and we want to come all year," he said, weighing the "advance of the phenomenal work of remodeling that has been in terminal 1, 2 and 3 (licensed to Rio de la Plata terminals) that will make the port of Buenos Aires more sustainable.

5. Port of Santos will double its capacity in 2013 (Brazil)

The port of Santos, the largest in Brazil, is responsible for more than a quarter of the country shipments; it will double in size by the end of next year.
The president of the campaign, Compañía Docas do Estado de São Paulo (Codesp), Roberto Correia José Serra, said that he will be able to move as many containers as all the other Brazilian ports combined: 8 million of TEUs, current amount is 3,2 million TEUs.
Likewise, he reassured that the increase of capacity is the result of a series of amplification, the purchase of the latest generation equipment and the implementation of the new private projects. Two represent 65% of the entire Santos expansion. The project will have a capacity of 2 million TEUs.

6. U.S. $ 50 million has been invested in rehabilitation of Venezuelan ports
- U.S. $ 50 million dollars have been invested in the purchase of equipment for the modernization and rehabilitation of six ports (Puerto Cabello, La Guaira, Maracaibo, El Guamache, Guanta and Ceiba) and are managed by the company Bolivariana de Puertos (Bolipuertos).
Said the minister of the Air and Water Transport, Elsa Gutierrez, in an interview during which she said that this investment has been made with resources from the ports.

7. Port of Veracruz exceeds 21 million tons of cargo in 2011 (México)

In 2011, the Port of Veracruz drove 21 million 89 thousands 849 tons, which allowed them to reach a historic level in the movement of cargo and commerce.
In a report, the Integral Port Administration (IPA), Veracruz mentioned that the previous number represented a growth of 12.1% in comparison to the 18 million 819 thousands 61 tons operated in 2010.
Juan Ignacio Fernández Carbajal, director of the IPA of Veracruz, indicated that the previous numbers represented the most important historical movement, “now that all the cargos are driven through this port have demonstrated an increase.”

9. More than 170 cruise ships are expected this season in Colombia

Cartagena de Indias, established as the leading cruise port in Colombia, was the location chosen for the official opening of the 2011-2012 season, during which is expected to arrive in this country more than 170 yachts, with about 414 000 passengers on board.
This was reported during the opening event of the season, in which Luis Ernesto Araujo Rumi, chief executive of the Tourism Corporation Cartagena de Indias, considered that in addition to these important figures of arrivals, "it is expected that by 2012 both investment as tourism continue to improve.”

7. Matarani Port mobilized 3.4 million tons of cargo in 2011 (Peru)

The Southern International Terminal (Tisur), the Peruvian company which administers the Port of Matarani in Arequipa, mobilized 3.4 million of tons of cargo during 2011, which meant a growth of 10% respect to last year.
Part of this dynamic has to do with the consolidation of the Contenedores Terminal, as an independent area of business for Tisur, which was able to increase by 20% in volume in cargo in this area in respect to 2010.
Likewise, there is an increased the movement of machineries and equipments, reaching to move 30 million metric tons to attend toexecute of the initiatives of Xstrata Copper in the Antapaccay and Las Bambas mines. In regards to the mobilization of copper concentrate, it has an 11.7% growth compared to the 2010 period.
