Technical Secretariat for the Decade of the Americas for the Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities (SEDISCAP)
During its 37th regular session, in June 2007, the General Assembly agreed to designate a Technical Secretariat to monitor the implementation and plan activities that would help achieve the objectives and lines of action of the Program of Action for the Decade of the Americas for the Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities.
As a result, in January 2008, the Permanent Council approved the resolution CP/RES.926 (1625/08), which established the objectives and parameters for the operation of the Technical Secretariat of the Program of Action for the Decade (SEDISCAP), as well as its installation in Panama.
SEDISCAP objectives are:
To Create a space for the Member States to exchange information and best practices, and therefore facilitate the implementation of the Program of Action for the Decade of the Americas for the Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities and their Families (States, civil society, universities and multilateral organizations);
To promote the mainstreaming through out the Inter-American System of the objectives of the decade;
To promote the participation of civil society and persons with disabilities and their families in the Program of Action;
To encourage research on all levels to help achieve the goals of the Program of Action;
To promote cooperation with the Committee for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities of the Inter-American Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities.
