Washington, D.C. - The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH) publishes today resolution 1/18 on Human Rights and Corruption. The Commission decided to adopt this resolution considering that corruption is a complex phenomenon that affects human rights in its integrality - civil, political, economic, social, cultural and environmental rights - as well as the right to development; that weakens governability and democratic institutions, fosters impunity, undermines the rule of law and exacerbates inequality.
This resolution is an integral approach of the IACHR on the subject, and although many of the aspects that it addresses have already been developed by the Commission; on this occasion, the IACHR will highlight some fundamental notions and formulates recommendations to address the phenomenon from a human rights perspective. The IACHR presented the Resolution to the Summit Implementation Review Group (SIRG) and expressed its expectation that the human rights dimension will be contemplated at the Summit of the Americas, an event to be held in April 2018, and which will center on the effect of corruption in the Americas. The IACHR will hold a side event in the framework of the Summit in Lima, Peru, on April 11 to present its Resolution, open to all interested persons.
A principal, autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), the IACHR derives its mandate from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has a mandate to promote respect for and to defend human rights in the region and acts as a consultative body to the OAS in this area. The Commission is composed of seven independent members who are elected in an individual capacity by the OAS General Assembly and who do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
