Third Summit of the Americas

Quebec City, 2001

At the Third Summit of the Americas, in Quebec, heads of State renewed their commitment with hemispheric integration and the national and collective responsibility to improve economic well-being and security in the region. Thus, they adopted a Plan of Action that seeks to foster greater prosperity, increase economic opportunities, promote social justice and develop human potential. Recognizing that progress towards more democratic societies, growing economies and social equity depends on educated citizens and well trained work forces, heads of States agreed on a series of policies to improve access to quality education through teacher training, education on values and the use of information technologies in classrooms as well as in the evaluation process to achieve these objectives. Finally, they came to the conclusion that better educational policies and greater investments in the educational system will contribute to reduce inequities and close the hemisphere's digital divide
