OAS Hemispheric Observatory presents Citizen Security Statistics for the Americas

Alertamerica.org: The OAS Hemispheric Citizen Security Observatory is constantly updating and publishing information about public security for all the countries in the hemisphere. The Observatory presents official information disclosed by the States, clustered into indicators that cover all social phenomena of crime and violence, as well as the initiatives developed to control and penalize them. These indicators are the most extensive repertoire of official information on security in the hemisphere.

The information for 2000-2012 period includes data for Intentional Homicide, Firearms, Non-lethal Violent Crimes, Demand and Drug Consumption, Prison Systems, Security Personnel and Victimization Surveys.

Authorities in the Region Dialogue on Penitentiary
and Prison Policies

The OAS organized the 3rd Meeting of Officials Responsible for Penitentiary and Prison Policies. The meeting was attended by officials from the OAS Member States responsible for the development of penitentiary policies, as well as participants from international agencies and civil society. During the event, the OAS Secretary for Multidimensional Security, Ambassador Adam Blackwell, highlighted that "the prison systems of the Americas face a deep crisis, with an evident deterioration of prison conditions." According to Blackwell, social reintegration is the essential purpose of imprisonment, but additionally, rehabilitation and reintegration of those who have committed crimes are guarantees of safety.

OAS supports Honduras in Security Matters
OAS

JOSE MIGUEL INSULZA, OAS SECRETARY GENERAL, recently met with Foreign Minister of Honduras, Arturo Corrales, and the permanent representative to the OAS, Ambassador Leonidas Rosa Bautista, to review progress of his country's Security, Justice and Human Rights. The Secretary General stated that "Efforts of Honduras on Security, Justice and Human Rights should continue to be supported by the international community."
