This course draws on the UTC basic series to provide primary health care professionals with the foundation to deliver treatment services timely to people with drug use problems.

Since 2018, CICAD's Demand Reduction Unit and the School of Psychology of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) have delivered the online course Universal Treatment Curriculum (UTC) for health care professionals in Hispanic American countries.

Objectives
  • To expand the capacity of health care systems in Hispanic American countries to treat substance use disorders.
  • To contribute to the continuing education of clinicians or professional care providers who treat people with substance use disorders in Hispanic American countries.
  • To encourage primary health care professionals to acquire the knowledge and skills they need to provide comprehensive care to people with problems caused by the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, based on the materials and contents of the Universal Treatment Curriculum (UTC) basic series.
  • To foster the exchange of successful experiences and good practices among professionals who provide clinical services to people with substance use disorders in Hispanic American countries.
Activities

Through the MOODLE e-learning platform, this course provides the theoretical foundations and essential components of brief interventions at the primary care level for people with substance use disorders.

Course graduates subsequently participate in monthly online clinical and academic sessions in order to build on the knowledge and skills they obtained during the three-week on-line course.
