The OAS Group of Countries Friendly to People with Disabilities was created in 2019 to support institutional and regional efforts to promote the rights and well-being of people with disabilities in all areas of society and raise awareness about their situation. life, in line with the objectives of the Inter-American Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (CIADDIS) and the Program of Action for the Decade of the Americas for the Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities (PAD), recognizing the importance of addressing the multiple forms of discrimination they face.

Objectives
  • Support efforts to mainstream the perspective of inclusion of people with disabilities, from a rights-based approach, in the corresponding projects and spaces of the organization.
  • Highlight and disseminate the achievements and contributions of people with disabilities to the development of their communities.
  • Promote progressively and according to the possibilities, physical and content accessibility for people with disabilities in the OAS.
  • Celebrate the progress of Member States in promoting and protecting the human rights of persons with disabilities and share such progress in the region.
Activities
  • Commemorate within the Permanent Council the international dates designed to raise awareness about the situation and rights of persons with disabilities, such as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, World Down Syndrome Day, and World Down Syndrome Awareness Day. Autism, among others.
  • Support in holding academic, technical or cultural events to promote the rights of people with disabilities.
