Representatives of the OAS Department of Social Development and Employment and Tutors from Chile’s Solidarity and Social Investment Fund (FOSIS) participated in Monitoring Visits in the four CARICOM countries participating in Phase 2 of the Puente in the Caribbean Program, namely Barbados, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Suriname. The visits, which took place from July 19 to 30, 2010, were an opportunity for the country teams and tutors to share feedback on the development of local adaptations of the Puente program and participate in training sessions. Ministers of the social development ministries of each of the four countries expressed their strong appreciation for the program and urged their staff to work assiduously to develop a successful program in their respective countries.

In each country, capacity building on the Puente Program was conducted with social workers, technical officers of the Ministries of Social Development, officers from other ministries as well as civil society representatives. The intensive training sessions resulted in an increased knowledge of the operations of the program, a better understanding of its application to the local context and a stronger commitment to work collaboratively in the design and implementation the local social protection initiative.  Educational materials from the Chile Puente Program were adapted to reflect the Caribbean context and served as a valuable tool in the capacity building sessions. Field visits to beneficiary families were also a part of the Monitoring Visits, allowing the FOSIS tutors to see firsthand the Caribbean reality.
