Washington, D.C. – The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) begins a promotional visit to Canada, which will take place from December 11 to December 14, 2023. The objective of the visit is to strengthen the Commission's relations with state and non-state actors, promote Inter-American human rights standards and the IACHR mechanisms.

The delegation is led by Commissioner Margarette May Macaulay, President of the IACHR, Country Rapporteur for Canada, Rapporteur for People of African Descent and Rapporteur for the Rights of Older Persons. President Macaulay will visit Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto accompanied by specialists from the Executive Secretariat.

The IACHR will hold meetings to address prioritized human rights issues with authorities and representatives of the State, as well as with non-state actors, such as civil society organizations and faculty members from different academic institutions. Also on the agenda, are two panels organized by the University of Ottawa (uOttawa) and the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) to promote the Inter-American Human Rights System and its mechanisms.

The visit is conducted within the framework of the IACHR Strategic Plan 2023-2027, particularly with respect to Program 21 on the promotion and dissemination of mechanisms and standards of the Inter-American Human Rights System.

The IACHR highlights the collaboration and willingness of Canada to host this visit.

A principal, autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), the IACHR derives its mandate from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has a mandate to promote respect for and to defend human rights in the region and acts as a consultative body to the OAS in this area. The Commission is composed of seven independent members who are elected in an individual capacity by the OAS General Assembly and who do not represent their respective countries of origin or residence.
